Comprehensive assessment of domestic biomass resources for energy production in China

摘要
Bioenergy is playing an intimate and critical role in the carbon neutralization process. However, a comprehensive estimation with long-term scale and high spatial accuracy of biomass resources in China is still insufficient. In this study, we estimated the China’s biomass resources potential (including crop residues, forest residues, and livestock manure) from 1998 to 2018, and mapped the distribution of these three biomass resources through specific transformation techniques with a spatial resolution of 1 km. Results show that the theoretical quantity of biomass increased from about 1800 Mt in 1998 to 2300 Mt in 2018 with an annual increase rate of 1.2%. However, the proportion of biomass that can be used for energy production has been decreasing due to the increasing utilization of residues, especially the increase in the proportion of crop residues used for returning to the field. Shandong, Heilongjiang, Inner Mongolia, Sichuan, and Henan ranked at the top five in terms of biomass resource potential over the past 20 years, totally accounting for one third of the national biomass resources. The usable potential of biomass energy in the country has reached 6.5 EJ in 2018, therefore biomass has the potential to become an important part of our country's sustainable energy production portfolio.
